Germanic halberd of the mercenaries

The halberd, lance, or spear of the Landsknechte was a very effective medieval cutting and thrusting instrument.

A halberd that was widely used in the late Middle Ages and early modern period has a broad blade with a short hook, and at the end, a thrusting blade. The usually 1½ to 2 meter long wooden shaft often had a polygonal cross-section or leather wraps to prevent the lance from twisting in the hand during a strike. The transition area between the blade and shaft was reinforced laterally with shaft feathers made of metal.

Landsknechte, who fought as mercenaries in various European wars, used the halberd due to its effectiveness in close combat and its ability to be employed against both infantry and cavalry. It was not only functional but also a symbol of the status and military training of the Landsknechte.
