Katzbalger Dolch with a blade made of steel including a sheath from the late 15th and 16th centuries.
The Katzbalger Dolch is a short, broad-bladed dagger that is typically worn for close combat and features a characteristic flattened blade as well as a simple, short grip groove. It was primarily used in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Germany and the surrounding regions and was typically part of the equipment of armor bearers, especially Landsknechte and other foot soldiers. The Katzbalger is characterized by its wide blade and thus good penetration power, but is less suitable for fine thrusts than for hard strikes.
