Product Description: Katana in Handachi form with intricately crafted blade. Handachi literally translates to half Tachi and represents a transition between the Samurai sword Tachi and the later popular Katana. This sword form was also very popular during the Edo period, and the Edo Handachi is the model for this specimen. The sword was worn like a Katana but still retains elements of the more ornate predecessor sword Tachi, which is evident in the design of the scabbard and the grip. The blade is forged from folded steel and has been treated with differential hardening. This results in a hard edge and a somewhat softer body, as is typical for Japanese swords. High-quality carbon steel with a carbon content of more than 0.7 percent was used for this purpose. The Maru blade is forged in the Shinogi Zukuri style, and the surface has been painstakingly polished. In the Ji area of the blade, the pattern of the folded steel is clearly visible; the upper area is polished to a mirror finish, and the hardened area at the edge is particularly emphasized, highlighting the straight Suguha Hamon. The edge is hardened to 56 HRC. The scabbard is made of wood. It is black but embedded with small, reflective particles, which corresponds to the lacquer of a Tachi. The end of the scabbard is equipped with a metal element. The grip is also made of wood, and the grip wrapping made of blue cord is crafted to the highest standards, including Hishigami (small pieces of paper that are incorporated under the grip wrap). The end cap of the sword is in Tachi style. The grip is so well crafted that one Mekugi is sufficient, as with the historical models. The sword feels very light in the hand and is easy to handle. History of the Mix of Tachi and Katana The Handachi is a mix of a Tachi and the later sword Uchigatana, known as Katana. It originates from a transitional phase between the two swords, and the Koshirae, or the mounting of the sword, has elements that were typical for both the Tachi and the Katana. The Tachi was the main sword of the Samurai warriors from the 10th to the 15th century. Thus, it was also the sword for official occasions. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the shorter Katana became increasingly fashionable, and many Samurai wore it. However, since the Tachi was still customary for public occasions, there were swords that looked like a Tachi but were worn with the edge facing up like the Katana. If necessary, the sword could be converted to a Tachi. This type of sword disappeared after the Katana became the official main sword of the Samurai. Later, during the Edo period, there was a renaissance for these swords, which were very popular due to their significantly more striking decoration compared to the normal Katana.
