The Sauer 505 Synchro XT Black Elegance repeating rifle combines proven Sauer precision with an ergonomic polymer stock
There was great anticipation for what the gunsmiths from J.P. Sauer & Sohn would present after ten years as the successor to their successful model, the Sauer 404. The Sauer 505 repeating rifle features a solid steel receiver, which, thanks to perfect skeletonization during machining, weighs only 732 g. Combined with the ergonomic stock and the cold-hammered barrel, you get a hunting rifle with the proven Sauer precision since 1751.
DLC Coating
In the Elegance package, the surfaces of the barrel and receiver are refined with a DLC coating. DLC stands for "Diamond-like Carbon," meaning "diamond-like carbon." This type of coating is very environmentally friendly and biocompatible compared to galvanic coatings. Through a thin-film coating process, the coated components become particularly resistant and very smooth.
Sun Cut
The bolt of your Sauer 505 repeating rifle from the Elegance package is refined with a sun cut. In this process, the surface is worked with a grinding wheel in such a way that an iris effect radiating from the center is created. When you move the treated surface, the angle of incidence of the light changes, and the ground area appears to rotate in a circle. The ball of the chamber grip is knurled and decorated with the Sauer screw.
The Stocks
The described refinements form a harmonious unit with all three stock materials – wood, carbon, and polymer – that immediately catches the eye. Here, your personal preferences are decisive.
Sauer offers two wooden models: the ErgoLux and – particularly suitable for female hunters – the Artemis / ErgoCompact stock. The wood is walnut and available in classes 2-10.
If you prefer the lightest variant, then choose the carbon stock Synchro XTC in elegant black. With this model, you can adjust the cheek piece to your personal physical needs when shouldering and aiming using the height-adjustable stock comb. An important criterion for carbon is, not least, its damping property, which maximally absorbs recoil.
If the aspect of durability is important to you, you can choose between two polymer stocks, the ErgoMax and the Synchro XT, the latter being a stock with a height-adjustable comb. You can also get these two models in elegant black.
The System: Steel Receiver and Bolt
The heart of the Sauer 505 is its system with an extremely smooth one-piece bolt, which is housed in a solid steel receiver. The bolt is also made of steel, longer than that of the predecessor model, and made from a single piece. This allows for quieter cycling due to reduced friction losses and a smooth chambering process. Since you likely chose a rifle of this type also for the feel of the cycling process, you will experience great pleasure with the Sauer 505.
The Manual Safety
The manual safety, which already distinguished the Sauer 404, has been further developed. It is now even easier to operate and makes your Sauer 505 even safer. With a light thumb pressure, the system can be cocked immediately before the shot, and just as easily, it can be released to unload in a relaxed state.
Trigger
"The trigger, however, is the real showstopper," writes Wolfram Osgyan in his test report (Wild und Hund, Issue 3/2024, p. 51), "free of creep, without dragging or sticking." The Quattro trigger with four weight settings ensures that the trigger is dry and you have the precisely suitable trigger weight. You can individually adjust the triggers as needed to 350, 750, 1,000, and 1,250 g. The adjustment is simple with the fore-end removed using the "Sauer Universal Key" (SUS), which can be optionally placed in the fore-end; the "Sauer Mini Universal Key" (MUS) is included as standard.
The Barrel
The cold-hammered barrel of the Sauer 505 rifle allows for extremely precise results when shooting. The specifications of the barrel result from the caliber size you have chosen. You can choose between a barrel with a smooth profile or a fluted barrel. The increased surface area of the fluted barrel dissipates heat more quickly, so that even with high shot sequences, no disturbing mirage occurs. Another advantage of fluting is the weight reduction.
Magazine
The magazine is made of polymer, like the Sauer 505 Synchro XT Black Elegance stock, making it lighter than its metal predecessor. The magazines are designed for the selected calibers and hold 2 to 5 cartridges. The integrated magazine safety MagLock prevents unintentional release of the magazine button.
Modular Sauer Principle
You can configure the modules of the Sauer 505 in two ways, either by freely assembling your new Sauer 505 or by choosing from three equipment packages. You proceed as follows:
You choose one of the 19 calibers in the corresponding barrel length and contour.
Then you determine which stock you want – here the polymer stock Synchro XT Black.
Finally, you decide on a pre-configured equipment package (Elegance, Highland, or Outback) or design your rifle completely according to your own ideas, for example, with individual chamber grip balls.
Furthermore, all scopes that can be connected to the rifle using Blaser saddle mounts can be used with the Sauer 505. This compatibility is a significant advantage that should not be underestimated.
