The .45 Schofield is similar to the .45 Colt. The differences are that the head diameter of the .45 Schofield is about 0.010 inches larger and the case length is between 1.090 to 1.100 inches, compared to 1.273 to 1.283 inches for the .45 Colt. The .45 Schofield has a significantly lower internal capacity to shoot light loads in most .45 Colt firearms without modifications. In some lever-action rifles, the extractor may need to be adjusted or the diameter of the locking groove on the cylinder reduced by 0.010 inches to accommodate the larger head diameter in Ruger Vaquero and Colt revolvers.
