Tips for Calculating Mount Height

Since you have the choice between different ring heights, you can adjust the mount height to the objective diameter and your habits. Especially in quick shooting, it is very advantageous if you do not have to make corrections while aiming, which could unnecessarily waste time.
You can easily calculate the theoretical minimum mount height by subtracting the main tube diameter of your riflescope from its outer objective outer diameter, and then dividing that value by 2 (since only the lower half of the objective is relevant for the mount height).
Let’s take as an example
a 3.5-10x50 with a 1" main tube and an outer objective diameter of 58 millimeters:
58mm - 25.4mm (1") = 32.6mm
32.6mm : 2 = 16.3mm
So you need a total mount height of 16.3 millimeters. Since the height of the bases is usually around 6 millimeters, for example, 'Super High' rings from Leupold with a height of 12.7 millimeters are required.
This is at least the theoretical or calculated value.
When you take a closer look at your bolt-action rifle, you will notice that the system has a larger diameter than the barrel. If you place a ruler on the bolt head, you may find that the difference between the ruler and the barrel at the point where the objective will be located is 6 millimeters or more.
In this case, 'Medium Rings' would be sufficient. If your weapon is a model with a thick match barrel, medium rings would definitely not be enough.
