The initial batch of the 500 S&W Mag (R) cases was manufactured according to the specifications of Smith & Wesson and Cor-bon for use with large pistol primers. On July 28, 2003, Smith & Wesson and Cor-bon changed the specification of the primer pocket to large rifle primers. Rifle primers have the same diameter as pistol primers but are approximately 0.006" taller. This was done to prevent the primer from being pierced by the firing pin under maximum loads and heavy bullets (bullets over 400 grains). It was found that the hole in the primer caused pressure that led to damage to the firing pin and the socket, similar to a cutting torch, and the harder case of a rifle primer will prevent this issue. All cases sold by Starline, Inc. after July 28, 2003, contain a primer pocket for large rifle primers. Hodgdon Powder has created load data recommending the use of Win. Large Rifle primers. Cor-bon has also tested CCI 250 primers (Magnum Large Rifle) and recommends them. Our new cases will have an "R" after the "Mag" in the headstamp to indicate the rifle primer. If you previously purchased 500 cases without an "R" in the headstamp and wish to modify them, you can use a rifle primer pocket uniformer to deepen the primer pocket, thus making room for large rifle primers by deepening it about 0.006".
