The .45-70 case has been tested at elevated pressures suitable for Magnum heavy hunting loads in appropriate weapon systems. When loading with black powder, it may be necessary to anneal the mouth to properly seal the case, as these loads produce lower pressures. The case is very robustly constructed to withstand high pressures associated with smokeless hunting loads. Since the only way to make brass harder is to work the material, the design is made stiffer so that customers can anneal it for specific applications.
