The 7.62x39 mm was developed in Russia as a medium-sized military cartridge and is now one of the most widely used military cartridges. The AK47 and its variants, as well as the SKS, have made this cartridge very popular due to the large number of affordable used firearms. This caliber is also available in AR-15 rifles (only a different bolt, barrel, and magazine are required) as well as in the Ruger Mini-30. Bolt-action rifles are now available from companies like CZ, Ruger, and Howa.

This caliber in the close to medium range is suitable for pests and game the size of deer when loaded with appropriate expanding projectiles.

The cases are designed for use with standard .311" diameter projectiles. If they are to be used with .308" diameter projectiles, they must be adjusted to the neck diameter.
