The 6.5 Grendel was developed for use in an AR-15 rifle to provide ballistic characteristics similar to the .308 Winchester, but with less recoil. This flat-shooting cartridge utilizes the inherently precise, high ballistic coefficient 6.5 mm bullet. Due to its short case length, it can use some of the longer, heavier match bullets, making this caliber one of the best choices for shooting at long distances from an AR rifle. With the right selection of bullets, this caliber is also by no means to be underestimated in the field and is suitable for hunting game the size of deer as well as for pest control.

Converting an AR rifle to 6.5 Grendel requires a new bolt, barrel, and magazines to feed the larger diameter cartridge. Several companies already offer complete AR upper receivers and firearms, and reloading dies are readily available. Several manufacturers are now also producing bolt-action rifles in this caliber, many of which are based on "mini" bolts, thus providing lightweight rifles with great range.

The 6.5 Grendel cases use the standard primer pocket with a .080 inch diameter as opposed to some companies that use the .060 inch primer pocket.
