The 6.5 Creedmoor was developed by Hornady in 2007 as a precision caliber, but has also established itself as an extremely popular hunting caliber. Although it is not as long as some other 6.5mm short calibers like the .260 Remington, the Creedmoor uses a 30° shoulder and a very low body taper to achieve similar ballistic properties. The shorter length also allows for greater versatility in bullet seating depth. Almost every major rifle manufacturer offers either bolt-action rifles or modern sporting rifles in 6.5 Creedmoor, due to its versatility and inherent precision.

The 6.5 Creedmoor cases use a Large Rifle Primer. This is the standard for this cartridge, and many prefer it due to its reliable ignition regardless of shooting temperature or the burn rate of the powder used.
