The .300 Blackout is based on a shortened 5.56x45mm case body that is necked down to .30 caliber. For AR-15 platform rifles and pistols, it only requires a barrel swap to switch from 5.56 to .300 Blackout. The main purpose of the Blackout caliber is to be used in suppressed firearms at subsonic speeds. Many bolt-action and single-shot systems are now also manufactured in this caliber.
