Cases for small boxer primers. The .300 Blackout is based on a shortened 5.56x45mm case body that is necked down to .30 caliber. For AR-15 platform rifles and pistols, it only requires the replacement of the barrel to switch from 5.56 to .300 Blackout. The main purpose of the Blackout caliber is to be used in suppressed firearms at subsonic speeds. Many bolt-action and single-shot systems are now also manufactured in this caliber.
