The .224 Valkyrie was introduced by Federal at the end of 2017. Unlike many calibers in the past that were a joint effort between an ammunition company and a single firearm manufacturer, the Valkyrie is already chambered by several AR-15 manufacturers such as LaRue, JP Enterprises, and CMMG, as well as several barrel manufacturers like Satern and Lothar-Walther.

The .224 Valkyrie is praised for its capabilities at long distances. Although it is not the fastest factory caliber in .22 caliber for AR-15, its short, thick case allows for loading long, high ballistic projectiles. This means it can maintain a 90-grain Sierra projectile up to 1300 yards at supersonic speeds, with much less recoil than other calibers. AR-15 rifles can be converted by changing the barrel and using a 6.8-SPC bolt and magazine.
