The Weaver rail is mounted laterally on the QR clamp adapter and primarily serves to hold the IR illuminator.
Advantages that arise from this type of mounting:
The additional weight of the illuminator sits directly on the lens and does not "hang" additionally on the riflescope.
The operation of the illuminator is significantly easier, as it is set further back.
