The new pistol was to be lightweight, exhibit maximum reliability, and ensure safe and simple handling.In March 1982, Austrian engineer and entrepreneur Gaston Glock submitted his prototype and was awarded the contract. He created the first weapon with a polymer frame, reducing the number of individual parts to 33. This significantly decreased the weight. Additionally, the polymer frame acts as a recoil dampener. Last but not least, he also invented the "Safe Action System," which prevents a discharge even if the pistol is dropped.Gaston Glock's stroke of genius was a sensationAlthough the plastic manufacturer had never designed a pistol before, he managed to prevail against all established handgun manufacturers. Between 1982 and 1984, more than 25,000 pistols of Generation 1 were delivered to the Austrian Armed Forces. The global success story of the GLOCK pistol began with this pistol, which became known worldwide as the GLOCK 17.The flat, black plastic box became known as "Glock Tupperware." There were also rumors that airport security devices would not detect the pistol, although this was not true.
