The Sauer 505 Synchro XTC bolt-action rifle features a lightweight carbon stock with a perfectly crafted steel receiver
The gunsmiths from Allgäu at J.P. Sauer & Sohn have introduced a worthy successor to their successful rifle, the Sauer 404, after ten years. The new Sauer 505 bolt-action rifle impresses with a solid steel receiver that, despite this robust material, contributes only 732 g to the overall weight of the rifle due to its construction. From the ergonomic stock to the precise steel receiver and the cold-hammered barrel, you will be thrilled with this hunting rifle.
The Stock
With the Synchro XTC carbon stock, you give your Sauer 505 rifle high stability and excellent ergonomics, ensuring extremely comfortable mounting, aiming, and shooting in every shooting position. The steep grip and the palm swell – individually designed for right- and left-handed shooters – combined with the height-adjustable comb provide optimal contact for every optical system. The stock length is 36.5 mm. Carbon is very lightweight yet robust, but its most important feature is its damping property, which maximally absorbs recoil. With the Synchro XTC stock on your Sauer 505 rifle, your shooting hand remains completely relaxed, significantly increasing your hit rate.
The System: Steel Receiver and Bolt
As mentioned, the system of the Sauer 505 consists of a solid steel receiver and a one-piece bolt, also made of steel. Steel has a significant advantage over aluminum in that it has much lower friction losses. Therefore, with the Sauer 505 system, you experience a super-smooth chambering and quiet cycling. The tactile act of cycling the action remains a magical moment even after years of hunting, and with the Sauer 505, this experience is further enhanced.
The Manual Safety
A unique feature of the Sauer 404 is the manual safety, which is highly comfortable and secure at the same time. The successor model, the Sauer 505, has seen further development in both usability and safety. A longer cocking stroke requires even less effort. With a light thumb pressure, you can cock your rifle just before the shot, and just as easily relax it afterward to unload.
Trigger
Like its predecessor, the Sauer 505 features a Quattro trigger with four weight settings, ensuring that the trigger breaks cleanly and you have the precisely suitable trigger weight. However, in the new model, the lowest setting has been further reduced from 500 g to 350 g. The other resistances remain at 750 g, 1,000 g, and 1,250 g, as with the Sauer 404. The adjustment is made with the fore-end removed using the "Sauer Universal Key" (SUS), which can be optionally placed in the fore-end, while the "Sauer Mini Universal Key" (MUS) is included as standard. With a trigger that is always dry and free of creep, the risk of a shot going awry due to a malfunction is practically zero.
The Barrel
The cold-hammered barrel of the Sauer 505 allows for extremely precise results when shooting. The muzzle diameter is standard at 17 mm, and the muzzle is equipped with an M15x1 thread for a suppressor. The Sauer 505 bolt-action rifle comes with a smooth profile barrel, but you can also receive it with a fluted barrel upon request. The increased surface area of the fluted barrel dissipates heat more quickly, preventing disturbing mirage even during high shot sequences. Another advantage of fluting is weight reduction. The standard barrel lengths are 51 cm and 62 cm, and there are also 56 mm barrels for calibers in the Mini, Medium, and Magnum categories. The corrosion protection for the barrels and all other steel surfaces of the Sauer 505 is a plasma nitriding. For an additional charge, you can receive a DLC surface (Diamond-like Carbon). In the configuration described here, with the Sauer 505 Synchro XTC carbon stock and a 51 cm barrel, the Sauer 505 bolt-action rifle is 101.5 cm long and weighs approximately 3.2 kg. The carbon stock is therefore the lightest option compared to wood and polymer. Stocks and barrels are compatible with the Sauer 404, allowing you to use them on both models.
Magazine
Unlike the predecessor model, which had a metal magazine, the magazine of the Sauer 505 is made of polymer, making it lighter. The magazines are designed for the chosen calibers and hold between 2 to 5 cartridges, depending on the version. An unintentional release of the magazine button is prevented by the integrated magazine safety MagLock.
Modular Sauer Principle
The Sauer 505 rifle also follows a modular principle. You have two options for configuring the modules: either you assemble your Sauer 505 completely freely according to your individual needs, or you choose from three equipment packages that the gunsmiths at Sauer have put together with experienced hunters for you. The procedure is as follows:
You choose one of the 19 calibers with the corresponding barrel length and contour.
Then you determine which stock you want – here described is the variant with the lightweight carbon stock Synchro XTC,
and finally, you decide on one of the three pre-configured equipment packages (Elegance, Highland, and Outback), or you design all components of your rifle completely according to your own ideas.
The Sauer 505 is compatible with all scopes that can be installed on the rifle using a Blaser saddle mount. This makes some new purchases unnecessary.
