The Savage MSR 10 Hunter is a compact semi-automatic rifle that impresses with more than just the standard performance of an AR10 rifle.
The combination of an improved 18-inch Savage barrel with Melonite QPQ surface coating, free-floating M-Lok handguard, and pressure point trigger ensures excellent shooting results. With the Magpul MOW stock and the fixed continuous Picatinny rail, the rifle can be customized to the shooter's needs. It is noteworthy that the gunsmith Savage has managed to keep the semi-automatic rifle 10% more compact than competing products.
The Receiver and StockThe receivers are made from a high-strength aluminum-zinc alloy, which is comparable in properties to most steels. The upper features a continuous Picatinny rail according to Mil-STD-1913 without cant. On the right side of the receiver, the magazine release is located within ergonomic reach of the index finger, allowing the shooter to keep their shooting hand on the grip. The two-position safety operates in accordance with AR10/AR15 standards.
The free-floating, octagonal handguard from M-Lok is equipped with a continuous Picatinny rail according to MIL-STD 1913. Savage installs a retractable Blackhawk stock. The adjustable support can be locked in 6 positions and can be extended by a total of 82 mm in length, ending with a rubber buffer approximately 25 mm thick. Here too, the shooter can take advantage of the extensive accessory market thanks to the AR-standard interface.
Gas SystemThe automatic cycling process occurs traditionally via direct gas impingement. The direct gas impingement is beneficial for precision, as it does not introduce additional mechanical parts that cause movement.
Notably, the adjustable gas block of the Savage MSR 10 simplifies the use of a suppressor significantly. The ability to easily regulate gas pressure prevents increased back pressure and bolt bounce. An opening in the handguard allows for gas block adjustment without disassembly.
Bolt and TriggerThe direct gas pressure loader locks via a rotating bolt with seven locking lugs. A strong extractor claw is located in the bolt head. Two pins ensure the secure ejection of fired cartridge cases.
The replaceable pressure point trigger of the MSR 10 Hunter comes from the US supplier Blackhawk and breaks at exactly 1,600 g. Thanks to a chemical surface treatment, the mechanical elements have a coating of nickel and boron. This results in a very hard, smooth surface, which ensures precise repeatability of the trigger characteristics.
The BarrelThe black 18-inch precision barrel made of carbon steel is fluted approximately two-thirds from the chamber.
Optimal heat dissipation is achieved through the button-rifled and perfectly centered barrel, which improves precision and rigidity, ensuring consistent impact patterns even during rapid fire. The special feature of the barrel is its groove-field profile. Savage relies on barrels from Obermeyer Rifled Barrels. They feature the profile known as "5-R Rifling." With 5 grooves and beveled field edges, the barrels allow for an even faster twist with minimal wear. The muzzle ends with a 5/8 x 24 thread, which standardly accommodates a two-chamber muzzle brake. It has two impact surfaces that divert gas pressure to the side and upward, thereby minimizing recoil and muzzle rise.
