The self-loading rifle CR 223 from Haenel is a semi-automatic rifle in caliber .223 REM, which has undergone significant functional revisions beyond the AR15/M4 standard.
The black Haenel CR 223 is equipped with a 20.5 cm long handguard that offers enormous customization possibilities through the NAR rails (STANAG 4694) and KeyMod interfaces. The free-floating barrel, available in lengths of 10.5 inches, 12.5 inches, 14.5 inches, or 16.65 inches, is freely suspended and ensures excellent shot groupings.
Gas Operation
Like the vast majority of all modern self-loaders in centerfire configuration, the Haenel CR 223 operates as a gas-operated rifle with a rotating bolt. Unlike a classic AR-15 design, the propellant gases tapped from the barrel do not flow directly through a tube onto the bolt carrier, but rather onto a short-stroke gas piston. In an indirect short-stroke gas piston system, the gas piston housed in the gas block moves separately from the bolt. It imparts a short mechanical impulse to a connecting rod that drives the bolt. This rod then remains in place, as the kinetic energy is sufficient to initiate the cycling process. The gas-operated rifle from Haenel shines with excellent long-term functionality, as heat and fouling are significantly reduced by the short-stroke gas piston system. The CR 223 surprises with the ability to easily adjust the gas operation. To do this, simply rotate the valve pin to the pre-marked positions.
Safety and Trigger
The trigger unit located in the grip is manufactured in Suhl and is significantly superior in material and workmanship quality compared to many US standard trigger groups. The direct trigger is set at 3,200 grams but can optionally be lowered to 1,500 grams by installing a match trigger. The lever safety is another element that distinguishes the CR223 from competing products. In conventional AR 15 systems, the weapon can only be secured when cocked. However, with the long gun from Suhl, safety activation is possible in the relaxed weapon state. A newly designed ambidextrous safety with a new control surface and an additional spring in the trigger mechanism ensures this feature. If the safety is engaged in the relaxed state, the special geometry ensures that the two arms of the safety spring are bent apart. When the hammer is cocked, the springs snap back into their original position, resting under the safety surface and thus blocking the trigger. The simple design of the trigger safety ensures absolute reliability and longevity.
Bolt and Barrel
The Suhl gunsmith Haenel protects all parts of the reliable seven-lug rotating bolt against corrosion through surface finishing. The manufacturer ensures maximum safety through the integrated firing pin safety, which complements the lever safety.
The cold-hammered barrel is offered by Haenel in lengths of 10.5 inches, 12.5 inches, 14.5 inches, and 16.65 inches. All barrel lengths are offered with a twist rate of 9 inches, except for the 10.5-inch variant, which features a 7-inch twist rate. In every variation, the free-floating barrel ends with a muzzle brake. This is screwed on via a muzzle thread of M 14x1 mm (for models from 2021 M15x1 mm).
Gun Case and Stock
The aluminum housing shows subtle modern accents in its lines, especially on the lower receiver, but in dimensions and technology, everything corresponds to an AR-15 system, except for the bolt and gas pressure system. As part of the known modularity, parts from other manufacturers are also interchangeable.
The pistol grip corresponds in shape and handling to a normal AR15 standard grip, but it has been enhanced with interchangeable rubberized grip panels.
The telescoping stock is adjustable in six positions via a lever and features various cutouts for slings. Furthermore, the Suhl gunsmith surprises with the installation of an adjustable stock comb, which makes it easier for the shooter to align with the sight line during precision shots.
The aluminum handguard features two NAR rails (STANAG 4694) on the top and bottom, which offer enormous customization options due to their backward compatibility. The front grip is rounded on the sides and equipped with KeyMod interfaces. It can be easily disassembled for maintenance and cleaning purposes. The high-quality upper NAR rail is complemented by the pre-installed mechanical folding sight. The aperture sight, front post, and base are made of high-strength plastic and can be easily removed if needed via the NAR mount.
Accessories/Modifications
The CR weapon concept is modular and compatible with the AR-15/M4 standard. The Suhl gunsmith also offers a wealth of optional attachments and modifications for individual customization of the weapon to the shooter through its accessory partner B&T.
