They have a diameter that fits snugly in the barrel of your weapon. When the shot is fired, the overpressure in the barrel and the rapid acceleration compress the felt in its length. This longitudinal compression causes the felt plug to want to increase its diameter. As a result, the felt is pressed with great force against the barrel wall, creating the desired cleaning friction. The felt plug presses into the grooves and follows the rifling. This reliably cleans every part of the barrel.
