917 Self-loading hunting rifle Speger

The development task for a self-loading hunting rifle was assigned to ZFT Dresden. The principal goal was to tap into the national and international civilian market in the hunting sector using the existing production technology of the AKM through specific modifications. The main objective was again to generate foreign currency. The original designation was Hunting Carbine 986. Later, the designation SPEGER was chosen as an acronym for Spezialgerätewerk. Since the appearance between a noble hunting rifle and a military weapon differs greatly, a primary focus of the development work was particularly on the stock and optics. Originally, a standard stock with a cheek piece was favored. In series production, a Monte Carlo variant was then used, which allows for a higher cheek rest on the scope. As is common with most hunting rifles, the mounting of a scope was to be facilitated. Here, the variant used for the attachment of night vision devices of the AKM was reused. The models ZF 4x32M and ZF 6x42M from VEB Carl Zeiss Jena were used as scopes. Additionally, an escape sight was constructively implemented. This consisted of a U-notch integrated rigidly on the housing cover and the front sight on the barrel. The magazine of the Speger was to hold 5 cartridges. Originally, an AKM magazine was shortened for this purpose. However, there was a problem with the hunting cartridge M 43 SPS or O.30 SPS, which was developed in the GDR. The cartridge touched the chamber wall during feeding and was damaged in the process. The problem here was the entry angle of the AKM ammunition. A requirement regarding shooter safety is that the tip of a subsequent cartridge does not touch the primer of a cartridge that may still be in the chamber, thus causing a discharge with the bolt open. To ensure the correct feeding of the O.30 SPS cartridge, the magazine lips and the follower had to be adjusted. The remaining magazine components remained the same. Thus, AKM magazines can also be used.
Calculations showed that a barrel length of 550 mm would have been necessary for the Speger in conjunction with the O.30 SPS cartridge. However, as already mentioned, only barrels with a length of 500 mm could be manufactured at that time. The barrel was also equipped with a muzzle attachment.
Five test samples of the Speger were produced, which were tested in October 1984. In January 1985, the design was revised again. Subsequently, a small series of 100 pieces was produced in Wiesa and exhibited at the spring fair in Leipzig. The hunting trials showed that the game always collapsed with the first shot. According to the firearms regulation of the GDR, the Speger was marked with the trademark of the Kombinat Spezialtechnik by an S and three triangles, as well as the caliber designation 7.62 x 39 mm.
