Description

The infantry rifle model 1871 (I.G. Mod. 71) was the first breech-loading rifle of the Mauser line in the German military and was introduced into service starting in 1872.

Manufactured in the royal Bavarian arsenal in Amberg, which produced Bavarian military weapons since the early 19th century and later manufactured the Werder and Mauser models.

Caliber: 11 mm Mauser (11 × 60 R) – a black powder cartridge with a metal case.
Lock: Cylinder lock (breech loader), robust and reliable for its time.
Barrel: Round to hexagonal, about 83 cm long, with sharp rifling structure.

Sighting: Adjustable notch sight (up to about 1200 m).

Markings & Identifications
Typical markings: “Amberg” under crown, followed by imperial proof marks such as “Crown over L” (Ludwig II of Bavaria)
Model designation: “I.G. Mod. 71” (Infantry Rifle Model 71)
Year stamp: often 1878, 1881 or 1882 (commissioning)
