The short Hip Holster was specifically made for the US Paratroopers, who could not be hindered by carrying a rifle over their shoulder with a sling or in their hands.
The short holster allowed the soldier to use both hands.
These holsters were designed for the full-length M1 Carbine, not for the folding stock M1A1.
