In the early 1980s, the Austrian Ministry of Defense pushed forward the modernization of the Federal Army through a tender for a new service pistol, which it referred to as the "Pistol 80" or "P80." The required self-defense pistol had to exhibit reduced weight, maximum reliability, and safe and easy handling.
Gaston Glock recognized his great opportunity and saw a clear goal ahead of him: to design an innovative pistol that is efficient to manufacture, easy, and safe to handle. To this end, he founded Glock Ges.m.b.H. in 1980. Alongside his long-time confidant Reinhold Hirschheiter, he recruited a small group of capable designers and began implementing his idea. He analyzed the pistols on the market, studied their patents, and immediately departed from traditional construction methods and manufacturing processes. His credo was: "On the way to perfection, every challenge must be accepted." Gaston Glock did not want to improve the old standards but to create something truly new.
He not only met the military's specifications but exceeded them by developing new approaches to pistol design and manufacturing processes. A significant innovation, for example, resulted from his experience in using polymers in manufacturing. Instead of a metal receiver that had to be laboriously milled, he relied on his core competencies and implemented a receiver made of injection-molded polymer. This was a completely new and bold approach at the time. The enormous physical stresses of a firearm required a special design that Gaston Glock meticulously developed and implemented.
To meet the tight deadline set by the Ministry of Defense, perfect coordination between idea, design, and immediate implementation in toolmaking was crucial for success. Supported by his team, Gaston Glock worked day and night on the development of the pistol and constructed a technically revolutionary pistol system in record time, which also convinced with its ingenious simplicity: The GLOCK P80 was born!
Through innovative manufacturing processes, he was able to not only significantly reduce the weight of the pistol but also optimize its reliability by designing a pistol that consisted of only 33 parts. Another advantage became apparent in the operation of the pistol: The material properties of the polymer absorbed the energy released during shooting much better than steel, resulting in a significantly lower perceived recoil for the user.
A decisive contribution to the ease of use was also made by a completely new safety concept that Gaston Glock called the "Safe Action® System." It still consists of three independently functioning internal safeties and has rendered the then-common external manual safety obsolete. This ensured safe, simple, and reliable operation. At the same time, this design solved a serious problem with conventional pistols. In drop tests, these pistols experienced unintended discharges that could lead to serious injuries to the user. Shooting accidents like these were limited by the innovative GLOCK pistol design.
In March 1982, Gaston Glock handed over his prototypes B1 to B5 to the Austrian Federal Army: Safe Action® self-loading pistol in caliber 9 millimeters with polymer grip, Browning tilting barrel system, pre-tensioned striker, and double-stack magazine with seventeen-round capacity. After extensive technical tests, Gaston Glock's prototypes achieved the maximum score, and the GLOCK pistol emerged as the clear winner.
Gaston Glock's stroke of genius was a sensation. Although he had never designed a pistol before, he was able to prevail against all established handgun manufacturers. Between 1982 and 1984, more than 25,000 pistols of Generation 1 were delivered to the Austrian Federal Army. The global success story of the GLOCK pistol continues impressively.
The news of the introduction of the GLOCK P80 to the Austrian Federal Army spread quickly. As a result, numerous European military and police forces became aware of the special product features of the pistol, including NATO member states such as Norway and the Netherlands. When these countries approached Glock Ges.m.b.H. to supply them as well, the triumph of the GLOCK pistol across Europe followed directly. At that time, the pistol was renamed: The P80 became known as the GLOCK 17.
Subsequently, the global success story continued its impressive course unabated, and in 2020, the 20 millionth GLOCK pistol was sold. With his legendary invention, Gaston Glock not only revolutionized the world of handguns but also succeeded in establishing the GLOCK brand as the global market leader in the field of pistols.
