Rescue line pistol, Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus (SPRA), with carrying or holding handle. The Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus (SPRA) by William Schermuly was one of the first rocket-powered projectile launchers. With his experience as a seaman, Schermuly understood the necessity of quickly bringing lines, ropes, and cables to a location, especially in life-saving situations. He began his development work in 1897, but it was not until 1920, with the market launch of his Schermuly Pistol Rocket Apparatus, that he achieved commercial success.
The concept was so successful that the British Admiralty mandated the launcher as standard equipment for ships over 80 tons or 50 feet in length starting in 1938, and civilian shipping companies also utilized the device. The technical basis for this was the Webley & Scott flare gun, which was fitted with a steel barrel extension. The device was stabilized during firing by the handle on the top of the barrel. The ammunition used is "Nitrogen Proof cartridge size 1".
The present specimen is in very good to good condition considering its age. It is a civilian version with valid British proof marks.
