The .30-06 is probably the most popular universal caliber, with which certainly all species of game on Earth have been hunted. The effective range of the cartridge, which can be equipped with RWS bullets from 9.7 g to 13.0 g, extends up to about 300 m.

The cartridge was developed in 1903 and received its final dimensions in 1906, the year it was also introduced as an ordinance cartridge in the USA ("Ball Cartridge, Caliber .30, Model of 1906"). The cartridge quickly became very popular as a hunting and sporting cartridge.

The .30-06 Springfield is also well shootable by recoil-sensitive shooters.

Short, handy barrels are increasingly gaining popularity among hunters. This trend is supported by the ever more frequent use of sound suppressors. Standard ammunition is designed for common barrel lengths of 600 mm. When firing standard ammunition from short barrels (420 mm to 550 mm), the following disadvantages become apparent: energy and velocity loss, limited effectiveness, pronounced muzzle flash, loud muzzle report, and increased wear on suppressors.

Therefore, RWS has developed the Short Rifle, a cartridge specifically optimized for use from short barrels. In practice, this means: shooting from short barrels without loss of performance.
