The .222 Rem. is very popular as an all-round cartridge for hunting and sport shooting. It is used for both benchrest shooting and hunting weaker game. 

In hunting, the cartridge is very suitable for roe deer and fox, with roe deer being reliably taken at distances up to 200 m. Additionally, the cartridge can be used for sitting hares as well as capercaillie and black grouse, as the small caliber is particularly gentle on game meat. 

The development of the cartridge took place as early as 1950 and was a new development by Remington at that time.
