The Viper Free is a stylish pocket knife whose simple appearance is deceiving. This tightly designed knife houses a brilliant locking mechanism, the Smart Lock system developed by Viper. At first glance, the system hardly differs from a conventional liner lock. In short, the difference is that a liner lock closes against a slanted edge. In contrast, the Smart Lock's locking lever falls into a milled recess. The tension on the liner can be adjusted using the slider on the back of the handle.

To explain in more detail: The lock face of the Smart Lock system is not beveled; instead, a 90° corner has been milled out against which the locking lever (lockbar) falls. Subsequently, the tension on the liner lock can be adjusted using the slider on the back of the handle to eliminate any play. When opened, the slider can be pulled back, making the unlocking process even more difficult.

The blade of this smart knife is made of D2 steel. G10 was used for the handle scales, providing good grip and comfort in hand. The knife has a liner only on one side, making the weight relatively low for a knife of this size.
