#8586 Taurus 689 revolver, cal. 357 Magnum / .38 Special. Both calibers will be listed on the invoice.
This model was produced from 1989 to 1998 (Wikipedia). It is a twin of the 669 model and differs from it only in the rib above the barrel (the 669 has no ventilation holes).
Overall, the 689 (and the 669) is very similar to the iconic S&W 686 revolver. This is no coincidence: from 1970 to 1977, the American conglomerate Bangor Punta held controlling interests in Smith & Wesson and more than 54% of the shares in Brazil’s Forjas Taurus. As sister companies, the two brands shared technical specifications, engineering drawings, methods, and manufacturing know-how. S&W engineers directly helped Taurus improve its revolver production processes.
Taurus built its production lines using machines, tools, and dies purchased or licensed from Smith & Wesson. Although the companies’ financial partnership ended in 1977, the know-how and technical foundation Taurus had acquired shaped the design of its later models from the 1980s and 1990s, including the Taurus 669 / 689 series.
A very well-preserved example in excellent technical condition.
The letter prefix “SD” is a production date code—in this case, April 1999. So the production dates found online are incorrect.
Current German nitro proof mark from 1999.
Six-shot cylinder, 4-inch barrel, SA/DA action, stainless steel.
Rear sight adjustable in two planes.
The revolver has been inspected and test-fired by a gunsmith.
