The Beretta Modello 948 (often identified as the Modello 1948) is a famous semi-automatic pistol produced by Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta between 1948 (or 1950 for large-scale production) and 1959. Developed by engineer Tulio Manioni, it represents a conversion of the famous Beretta M1934 (the Italian Army’s service pistol in World War II) for purely civilian and sporting use, chambered instead in the small, inexpensive .22 Long Rifle caliber. It operates by blowback (unlocked breech), with single-action operation and an external hammer. Unlike its larger siblings in 9 Short (M1934) or 7.65mm (M1935), which were made entirely of steel, the 948 has a lightweight aluminum alloy (Ergal) frame. This drastically reduces the firearm’s weight to around 370–380 grams unloaded. Two-tone versions are very common, with a frame anodized in bronze/dark brass or silver, paired with a black-blued slide and barrel. The single-stack magazine holds 9 or 10 rounds (depending on the variant) and typically features the iconic beavertail finger rest. The grips have the word “BERETTA” printed horizontally across the top, unlike the classic circular “PB” monogram on earlier models. Just under 100,000 units were produced in total before the line was discontinued in favor of Beretta’s more modern Series 70. The one we’re presenting is in excellent condition, as it comes from a collection. Blued version; barrel and action are in excellent condition. Caliber .22 long rifle. Common firearm.
