The M1 Carbine .30 is not the same as .30-06. The .30 Carbine is considerably shorter and lighter and was developed specifically for the M1 Carbine. A standard .30 Carbine projectile weighed about 110 grains and had a muzzle velocity of about 1,990 ft/s when fired from the M1 Carbine.
What makes the M1 Carbine special
More than six million were produced during the war. This was done not only by Winchester, but also by several other American manufacturers, including Inland, Underwood, IBM, Rock-Ola, and Quality Hardware. As a result, original M1 Carbines can vary considerably in manufacturer, parts, and production details.
There are also several variants. The M1A1, for example, had a folding metal stock and was intended for airborne units, among others. The later M2 was a select-fire variant that could also fire automatically.
