Over-and-unders need a solid locking system because each shot applies pressure on the action to open it. For this reason, most manufacturers place the locking lugs on top of the action, making them stronger but also bulkier than necessary.
Thanks to its long experience, Beretta uses two conical locking lugs halfway up, just between the barrels. This system gives the 686 action the strength of a keystone while allowing the mechanism to be considerably compact.
The advantage is that the shooter’s eye is much closer to the level of their supporting hand: this results in much better balance, greater hand-eye coordination, and thus more targets hit.
