The claw grips the groove on the cartridge case base and pulls the spent case out of the chamber – if it breaks or fatigues, this results in no ejection or cases sticking in the chamber. It is a typical wear part: it lasts a long time but not forever, and with high round counts, it is one of the parts you should have as a spare in your case.
